Staff Sgt. Ryan Smith works as a human intelligence collector. He uses his language and people skills to interact with communities, gather information and establish trust.
Smith has been to Iraq twice. Since he speaks Arabic, he can converse with Iraqis and listen to their conversations. He’s been able to gather knowledge that helps protect his fellow Soldiers. Smith’s work has also helped Americans and Iraqis better understand each other’s cultures.
