Students at the U.S. Coast Guard Academy in New London, Conn., participate in training exercises. The Coast Guard Academy offers full four-year scholarships, and the competition to get in is fierce. Graduates receive a Bachelor of Science degree and are commissioned as officers. There is a five-year minimum service obligation.
