Counseling, Social Work and Human Services Careers

As in the civilian world, members of the Military sometimes seek guidance from counselors or religious leaders. Counseling, Social Work and Human Services officers provide emotional and spiritual support to servicemembers in the form of counseling, social work and religious services. Many officers in this field have prior training, whether as social workers or psychologists or as practitioners of a specific religious tradition (for example, priests, rabbis or imams).

Possible Responsibilities

• Conduct religious services in a variety of faiths
• Counsel individuals who seek guidance
• Conduct research on human and animal behavior
• Treat patients individually and in groups
• Supervise counselors and caseworkers
• Plan and monitor equal opportunity groups
• Conduct psychological testing

Training Provided

Classroom instruction is provided for Counseling, Social Work and Human Services officers, with the exception of psychologists, who must have prior training. Sample courses include:
