To run properly, a ship or submarine requires equal parts manpower and engine power. Therefore, it is up to Naval and Maritime Operations officers to manage the various personnel departments aboard their vessels and direct engine operations, maintenance and repair. These officers combine management skills with a love for the sea in this adventurous field.

- Enforce International Maritime Law
- Command vessels of all sizes at sea or in coastal waters
- Direct search and rescue missions
- Ensure subordinate personnel are properly navigating vessel
- Delegate engine room repairs
- Direct engine room operations in nuclear or diesel-powered vessels
