Today's Military:

The Discussion

Darrell Harper: Well, when he first came to me and told me that he was considering going into the Army, of course I was nervous.

Sherrie Gibson: Christopher hinted around, he would drop little hints about, well, I’d like to travel.

Ronald Brown: My son, just out of the blue, just, “I’m going Navy.” It’s like, “OK.”

Keith Freshour: I warned him, do you know what you’re getting yourself into? Because you haven’t liked the idea of me telling you what to do, and our rules hadn’t been as near as strict as the Marines will be. Do you know what you’re doing?

Mary Turner: My reservations were only understand what it is that you’re really doing. It is military service. It’s not going out and getting a job. It’s something where you really put yourself out for something bigger and better than yourself.

Darrell Harper: One of the major reasons that he could tell me that would make me relax was he would say, Dad, I still can go to school. I’m going to go to school in the Service. They’re going to pay for it, and I can get me a hands-on experience on how to step up and be a man, and do the things that a man needs to do.

Doug Parker: Well, I thought going to a military academy, it was going to groom him to be a leader, and instill in him service for his country, which he already had going in there, a love for his country. We just felt like it was a good thing for him.

Kathy Jerome: From the time that he first started telling me that he wanted to do this, nervous? Yes. Concerned? Yes. But thinking about Eric, for Eric, made me feel good that I’ve at least given him the opportunity to think that he can do anything, that he can do anything.
