Today's Military:

Learning

LINDA FRESHOUR: One thing I would suggest to him is to be trained for something that they can use when they get out.

DARRELL HARPER: They have a chance to learn a career, to go to school, get a great education, and to come home and be whatever they want to be.

ARLENE MARQUIS: One of the things that we actually talked with both boys about before they chose a field that they would be interested in was to think about what you’re going to do with this after. It would just be a shame to spend all of this time and energy learning something that could only be used in the Military.

LINDA FRESHOUR: I would look at the bigger picture and be trained for something that they could use when they get out.

JAMES PONTON: The Guard has helped him to understand where he has to go. He has to go from A to B, and he has to work hard in order to accomplish his goals to get into the nursing program.

DARRELL HARPER: ... It gives you a direction, it gives you an alternative. Even if you don’t decide to go on to go to school, it gives you an opportunity for a job, as we stated earlier. He’s in the Military; he has his CDL [Commercial Driver’s License]. So, now he has a chance to do something else. He can drive trucks. He has an opportunity. He’s learned different trades. He knows something. He knows how to use his hands. He knows how to use his mind. He knows how to get into a situation and how to get hisself out of a situation. You know? The things that you need to know in everyday life, he knows that now.
